Pet Insurance Cost Calculator
Estimate a typical monthly / annual premium range for your pet's profile, coverage terms, and location.
Two-stage estimator: a species baseline (dog $46/mo, cat $24/mo at a $5k / $250 / 80% mid-plan) × coverage factors × demographic factors, plus an optional wellness add-on — baselined to NAPHIA and Forbes 2026 averages.

What affects your cost
| Factor | Effect on premium |
|---|---|
| Species | Dogs cost more than cats (dog base $46/mo vs cat $24/mo) |
| Age | Older pets cost more — especially 8+ years |
| Breed risk | High-risk breeds (bulldogs, GSDs) cost more; mixed/toy breeds less |
| Location | High-cost regions (CA, NY metro) add 10–30%+ |
| Reimbursement % | Higher reimbursement = higher premium |
| Deductible | Higher deductible = lower premium ($250→$500 cuts ~15%) |
| Annual limit | Higher / unlimited limit = higher premium |
This is an estimate, not a quote. Pet insurers set premiums with proprietary actuarial models; only a carrier can give a binding price. Run a real quote before choosing a policy.
Buyer guidance
Understand these before you buy:
- How a claim pays (deductible + coinsurance): most policies reimburse on a per-condition, annual basis. Example: a $1,500 vet bill with a $250 annual deductible at 80% reimbursement returns ($1,500 − $250) × 80% ≈ $1,000. Your out-of-pocket is the $250 deductible plus the 20% you co-pay (plus any amount above the annual limit). Higher reimbursements and lower deductibles mean more protection but a higher premium.
- Pre-existing condition exclusions: conditions present (or showing symptoms) before your policy’s start date — and during any waiting period — are typically excluded permanently, even if your coverage later improves. They do not become covered later.
- Waiting periods: new policies usually block claims for a period after start — commonly ~14 days for accidents and ~14–30 days for illnesses (knee injuries/ACL and dental often longer, sometimes 6 months). Get coverage while your pet is young and healthy — pre-existing exclusions are why waiting until a problem appears rarely works.
- Rates rise as your pet ages; insurers can change premiums at renewal. Read the full policy for per-condition limits, exam-fee coverage, and hereditary-condition riders.
