Choose a percentage (preset or free entry) OR a fixed dollar amount. The field you edit last becomes the active tip source.

Splitting

If you split by headcount and a mandatory service charge / auto-gratuity is already on the bill, tip on the pre-charge subtotal to avoid double-tipping. This calculator assumes the bill is your pre-tip subtotal.

Tipping guidance (US convention)

  • Standard restaurant server tip: 15–20% of the pre-tax subtotal; ~20% is more the norm in higher-cost areas.
  • Adequate service ~15%; good service 18–20%; exceptional 20–25%; buffets ~10%; takeout optional ~10%.
  • Taxis/rideshare 15–20%; delivery 15–20%; hairdressers/massage 15–20%.
  • Hotel housekeeping: a fixed $1–$5/night, not a percentage.
  • Convenience rule: 10% is easy mental math; double it for 20%.
  • A mandatory auto-gratuity / service charge is not a tip — under IRS Rev. Rul. 2012-18 such charges are treated as wages, not tips. Don't double-tip on top of it.
  • Tipping varies by culture abroad; some regions expect none or less.

This calculator computes tip on the pre-tip subtotal you enter. If a service charge is already included in the bill, subtract it first or disclose your convention.
