What a comprehensive policy typically covers
- Trip cancellation / interruption (capped at reimbursable trip cost)
- Emergency medical (capped benefit — commonly $50,000–$500,000)
- Emergency evacuation (capped benefit — commonly $100,000–$1M+)
- Baggage & delayed baggage
Medical and evacuation are fixed benefit caps, NOT a percentage of trip cost — a cheap policy relative to trip cost may have thin limits. Check those caps explicitly for international travel.
This tool estimates and recommends at a general level; it does not quote, sell, or underwrite insurance. Premiums and coverage vary by carrier and policy language. Read the policy wording and confirm coverage with the insurer.
Data sources
- InsureMyTrip — 4–10% of trip cost
- NAIC — Travel Insurance (5–10%; CFAR)
- NerdWallet — ~6–7% typical
- Squaremouth — CFAR benefit
- Allianz — Pre-existing condition waiver
- MoneyGeek — premium % by age
Pricing rule: ~4–10% of trip cost (InsureMyTrip/NAIC), ~6–7% typical (NerdWallet). Age multiplier follows a smooth curve from ~4.5% (age 25) to ~11% (age 70+) per MoneyGeek/age data, normalized so the 6% typical applies at age 40. Trips over 14 days add +0.75% of premium per additional week (per the spec's duration factor).
